Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from her family and she was raised by her mother, grandma and godparents. She suffered from an anxiety disorder that was rooted in words as a young toddler. Ford's love for acting grew in her early years. Ford joined in the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after just one week she realized that she was not a fit. Ford reapplied for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and, on her fourth attempt she was eventually admitted. Her classmate included Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford's first appearance on television was an episode in 1991 called Surgical Spirit. By the time she graduated, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate was seen in television programs including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London's Burning in the Nineties. The regular theatre work she performed led her to join the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. Tate started to get noticed due to her stand-up comedy in the year 1996.
